Yesterday I wrote a post about everything being for the good. Interestingly, today when I opened my daily message from Neale Donald Walsch he had written something very similar. He said God wanted me to know:

…that it sometimes looks like “one thing after the other,” but really, it is Blessing After Blessing.

I know, I know…you don’t experience it that way. But that’s because you don’t see it that way. In this business of life, “What you see is what you get.”

If you think you are looking at struggle, struggle is what you will experience. If you decide that you are looking at a gift (even if you can’t see it clearing in this exact moment), a gift is what you will get. Just wait. You’ll see. I mean that literally. You will see.

I believe we get messages for a reason. I don’t always open Neale’s emails. I only open them on some days. The fact that I opened this email the day after I wrote a post about seeing everything that happens as “for the good” strikes me as quite synchronistic. I’ll take that to mean I’m on to something: I–we–should all try harder to see the blessing (the good) in all that happens to us. And not only will we have an easier time accepting our situations, but we will create more blessings and more good in our lives.

Lots of experts–including me!–will tell you to think positively and to speak positively to yourself. These are not new ideas.

The fact that our thoughts are creative has been around for a long time, as the author of The Secret wanted us to realize, however, it has been no secret. As the Law of Attraction says, we must combine our thoughts and feelings to create what we want. (Add action into that formula.)

And psychologists have long known that when we use affirmations our subconscious mind tends to believe what we say. That’s why positive self talk works. We affirm that what we want is already true and the mind responds as if it is.

Many spiritual traditions also say that we know everything there is to know prior to taking on a physical body. However, as soon as we are born, we forget all that knowledge.

I watched a little girl in a video that seemd to be having a moment of remembering…and she provides a wonderful example of what it means to take time in the morning to combine our positive thoughts with positive feelings. Indeed, using these principles in the morning can help you create a positive day. She’s “doing positive self talk” or affirmations exactly as they should be done. She’s demonstration these principles for all of us–and then running off to have a great day!

So watch and learn from an expert!

I’ve been thinking today about the benefits of speaking no evil. You see, I was writing a post for my Examiner column on the topic, and, as often happens, that got me thinking in much more general terms. Let me back track a bit.

How often do we each speak badly of others–which basically constitutes speaking evil? How often do we gossip and, in the process, slander those about whom we speak? How often do we criticize or judge without a second thought to what we are doing?

Most of us do this a lot…every day…some people every hour. In Judaism, we call this lashon hara, or the evil tongue.

I know I’m at fault. I’ll say something bad about a person I know while telling someone else about my day. I’ll relate a story about their behavior, which I didn’t like. I’ll talk about how someone cut me off in traffic. I’ll discuss some one’s work practices with which I don’t agree. I’ll criticize the government. I’ll complain that the waiter moves too slowly. I’ll tell my husband that our kids are lazy because they leave dishes all over the house.

What about you? How often and when do you commit lashon hara or speak evil of others? Be honest now…

Here’s the problem with doing so: Our words have a creative energy. What we focus on expands. If we focus upon all those things we don’t like, if we judge and criticize, we’ll create more of all those things. Yuck! What a horrible fact of life! None of us want more of the things we complain about. So we must stop complaining, judging, criticizing.

And we must stop talking about other people. This negativity just begets more negativity. It doesn’t help us in any way. It simply makes us and our lives feel dark and heavy, because the energy around this type of language is just that, dark and heavy.

Instead, we need to speak using positive words. These will create light and uplifting energy patterns in our lives. They will help us focus on the things we want and help us create them.

I took a metaphysical class recently, and we told to put money in the jar each week for our negative thoughts and words–a dollar for each one! We were told to add money for negative attitudes in general. We ended up with a lot of money in that jar. We then donated it to charity.

Get a jar and put a penny, a dime, or a dollar in there every time you catch yourself speaking badly about someone. See if you can break the habit of lashon hara. Commit to speaking no evil.

Remember, speaking evil is a habit. Habits can be broken.

Today I had the chance to speak about my Kabbalistic conscious creation process on Europe’s Secret to Success Internet radio show. (You can listen to the show here.) While I spoke with the show’s host, Natasha Abudarham, I began thinking about how important it really is to begin any project with a desire to fulfill your soul’s purpose.

You see, no matter whether your project entails manifesting a new car, finding a new job, writing a book, improving a relationship, losing weight, or getting out of debt, you must begin by asking yourself how doing or accomplishing these things allows your soul to do what it came to this Earth to do. Every soul has a job here. Each person has a unique talent or gift. Everyone is good at something or especially suited to some task. We each feel passionate about something–when we do that something our heart sings. That’s what we are supposed to be doing. And when you or I understand how what we want or need–the project we want to undertake–serves that purpose, we’ll have an easier time meeting our goal or manifesting our desires.

That’s why the first step in my conscious creation process asks people to get in touch with what the Kabbalists called “Adam Kadmon,” the blueprint of all creation or, what I call the repository of your soul’s purpose. I want you to discover your unique talent or gift and how you are going to bring that into the world. I want you to create from a place that is in touch with your soul’s purpose–with the reason you are here. When you create things that help you fulfill your soul’s purpose, you manifest those desires more easily. They fit into the Divine plan and, therefore, you find them taking physical form almost miraculously when you set your mind, emotions, and actions to creating them. Additionally, you will want to share them as a way of fulfilling your soul’s purpose and completing the conscious creation process as I outline it.

I think overall we manifest things more quickly and easily when they fit into the Divine Plan…not into some human plan. If you aren’t just manifesting more “stuff” but things that help you fulfill your soul’s purpose–things that help you do what you are meant to accomplish in this lifetime, you’ll have more success with your conscious creation efforts.

Remember, this is a co-creation process after all. You and the Ultimate Creator are creating together.

If you don’t have any idea what your soul’s purpose might be, you might find this post helpful.

I mentioned that people lose faith every day for many reasons. I touched on the fact that every day we have to do faith…find a way to regain our lost faith.

I’m wondering, how do you manage to do that…or do you? I’d love to have some readers comment about the techniques you use so others could benefit from what you’ve learned.

For me, I talk to God a lot. I pour my heart out in prayer and then I meditate; I listen and wait to hear the Still Small Voice–the one that sounds a lot like me–speaking to me. I do this while sitting, walking, riding my bicycle, driving my car.

I also make myself trust that God’s hand exists in all that is happening. I tell myself over and over again that, even if I can’t see it, find it, understand it, a reason exists for the way life unfolds around me. I remind myself that one day I will know why things happened as they did.

And I remember that I am a co-creator with God here on Earth. My thoughts are creative, as are my actions. I can manifest things by by being, thinking, feeling, doing, giving, and receiving. This is kabbalistic conscious creation, or the law of attraction at it best. Using all of these steps, I can tune in to God and tap into the Divine flow. That helps me understand and have faith in all that happens in my life and in the world–both good and bad.

How about you? How do you regain lost faith or simply continue to have faith each day?

Every day I wake up, come upstairs to my office, sit down in front of my computer, and begin working. Sometimes I manage only to accomplish a few minutes of time spent on my own projects. Other days, I spend many hours working towards my personal goals. Each day, however, my mind turns periodically from whatever I’m working on back to the real work I want to being doing–writing my books, composing articles related to those topics for publications, and speaking about the those topics to audiences to that I might uplift, enlighten, inspire, or help someone in some way.

On the days I don’t feel like I’m making any headway–especially on those days, I try to remember to look up at a greeting card my husband once gave me. It bears the words of Henry David Thoreau: “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” I remind myself that I am doing just that…taking small (sometimes) confident steps towards my dreams and trying to live the life I have imagined. Therefore, I must eventually meet with success.

Too many of us give up on our dreams before they come true. Too many of us get frustrated and impatient. I say take the motto, “Never give up. Endeavor to live the life you imagine!”

We must have faith and continue moving forward, visualizing that life, believing it will become a reality, and taking inspired action towards manifesting it. These important tools require us to focus our thoughts, have a clear intention, imagine our goal or dream already created. For those who know about and believe in the power of conscious or deliberate creation (The Law of Attraction), this comes into play but with action added in. I’m not talking about simply sitting back and visualizing. I’m talking about doing something–”advancing confidently” via inspired action steps. I’m talking about “endeavoring to live the life” we imagine–that means exerting effort.

Will you do so? Will you join me in advancing confidently in the direction of our dreams and endeavoring to life the life you imagine?

Today I found myself wondering if I believe that God punishes us. I know the Torah offers examples of God punishing people. For example, there’s the story of Moses not being allowed to enter the Promised Land, because he hit a rock rather than talking to it. I just don’t believe that the bad things that happen to us are God’s way of punishing us…at least I don’t believe God behaves that way anymore (if he/she ever did). I know on the High Holy Days we pray for forgiveness for our “sins,” so we can be “inscribed” in the “book of life” for another year, but I think their some poetic license in this language along with the energy that we have to create and co-create with God our lives via our intentions and actions.

I believe in the Law of Attraction. You need only visit my website, or read my booklet, The Kabbalah of Conscious Creation, to know that this as fact—although I look at it from a very Jewish perspective. That means I believe we create, or attract, things into our lives based on a combination of our thoughts, feelings and actions. That said, you won’t find me saying that the people in Haiti created that earthquake on Tuesday or brought it upon themselves in any way shape or form.

Nor will you find me saying things like what Pat Robertson said about why the earthquake occurred in Haiti. As thousands lie dead, buried or crying for help from the earthquake that devastated Haiti Tuesday Robertson opened his mouth and said the Haitians brought it upon themselves, because they had made a pact with the Devil. (If you don’t believe that Robertson said that the Haitians were being punished by God, you can listen to the video clip here.) That’s what got me thinking about this question: Does God punish us–not that I believe for a minute that God brought that earthquake upon the Haitians as punishment, mind you. I don’t think they created the disaster.

I believe some things just happen. God could, but doesn’t, control everything. God doesn’t control when an earthquake hits, and it affects all sorts of people. Those who do good things and those who do bad things. Those who believe in God and those who don’t. Those who observe commandments and those who don’t.

We each have the ability to create a lot of things in our own lives, but we don’t create disasters for our whole country. I’m sorry. I just don’t believe that. And I don’t believe that God would punish anyone—Haitians or Jews—in such a way. I think nature does what it does.

I think there is a Divine plan. We may not understand it. We may not know why these people in Haiti must suffer through this disaster now. It seems to make no sense. Maybe one day, we’ll see that some good has come out of it. Right now, we can only see the lives lost and the destruction left in its wake. We wonder where God can be in this? Can this be God’s hand?

I think God’s hand is helping find the victim’s that are still alive. I think God’s hand is in the rescue workers and those offering assistance. I think God’s hand is helping give those affected faith and strength and hope for the future. And maybe they will come out stronger and more abundant and prosperous. Maybe somehow the nation will be renewed in some fashion. Wouldn’t that be a miracle? I hope one day we can look back and see God’s hand in many, many ways…but not as a hand that is punishing the people of Haiti as Robertson would like us to believe.

One of the first metaphysical or spiritual lessons I learned came down to five words: What you focus on expands. This lesson represents the crux of what now people call the Law Attraction, deliberate creation and conscious creation. I write about it often, and I’ve even published a booklet and e-book on the topic, called The Kabbalah of Conscious Creation. It’s a simple premise really–place your attention on something, and you will attract more of it.

There’s really more to it than that, though. Not only do we create energy around the things we place our attention upon, thereby drawing more of those things into our lives, we also tend to “do” more in the areas in which we focus our attention. In other words, we actually end up placing more of our own energy and action in that area, which generates more energy as well. The more energy we place in any one area of our lives–be it in the form of our thoughts, actions, words, or emotions (all of which are necessary to consciously and deliberately create our desires an manifest our dreams)–the more energy we generate. And this not only makes us focus more attention on this area, it also helps us attract what we desire.

That said, even when we aren’t wanting to “create” something per se, we can see how our focus or attention on something affects the energy around it and what it “attracts.” This past month my focus, action and energy on many fronts has been on another blog other than this one. In November I write a daily blog called Write Nonfiction in November. Organizing the guest bloggers, writing the introductions and my own posts, formatting and editing posts, promoting the blog, and generally manging the whole project takes up a huge amount of my time and attention. For this reason, I didn’t do a lot of writing in As the Spirit Moves Me during November, and when I did, my attention wasn’t as focused on the blog. I was distracted. My attention was scattered.

Because my attention was not in one place–not focused like a laser beam, and because I wrote and posted less blog posts, my readership on this blog fell off considerably. I could easily see the correlation between how much I write–how much I focus my attention on this blog and put my energy (also in the form of action–writing–and emotion) into it–and how many people read this blog by simply looking at my statistics. Each time I put my energy into the blog, readership went up.

This provides a great example of how the lesson works. What you focus on really does expand…always. This is especially true when you place your attention and energy on your work-related projects, your art or any project in which you believe. Your energy will draw others to your work.

In the same way, you can manifest other things you desire by focusing your attention and energy upon these dreams and goals. Be sure, however, that you focus attention, action and emotions on what you desire as well. Although each one of these elements will begin the manifestation process in and of itself, you need all three to get the energy moving in a really powerful manner.

Think about the areas in your life you are NOT focusing upon. From what have you become distracted? You’ll easily see what you are manifesting there. You probably are creating very little or nothing. In my life, for the last 8 or 9 years I have spent almost no time trying to develop close friends. I haven’t gone out and participated in activities where I might have met “like-minded” people. I haven’t made time to be with the few acquaintances I whom I might have nurtured into friends. Thus, I have almost no good friends. However, when I lived in Atlanta, I spent a lot of time doing things that allowed me to develop really good, strong friendships. Today, some of those women are still my best friends.

What you focus on expands. This represents the most important lesson you ever will learn. If you want to manifest your dreams, achieve your goals, create your desires, put this lesson to use in your life. Focus on what you want–not on what you don’t want. You surely will see–and create–more of it.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day. While most of North America finds reason to feel grateful on this day, everyone the whole world over can work on having an attitude of gratitude on this day…as well as every day. So much of having an attitude of gratitude involves simply training ourselves to feel gratitude and to see the good in our lives on a regular basis-rather than the opposite. Many of us have trained ourselves to complain about what we don’t have or don’t get -the bounty we don’t receive-and to then feel anything but gratitude. (We feel resentment and anger instead).

I’ve said this before, but I was taught that a prayer of gratitude is the most powerful prayer of all…more powerful than any petitionary prayer or any other type of prayer you can think of. I always think it’s interesting that in Judaism we are taught to say 100 blessings a day.

In the Jewish tradition, the first prayer we offer each morning is one of gratitude for our soul being returned to our body after sleep and for all the parts of our body working. Everyone can at least thank God for the fact that their openings are open and their closed places are closed…as the Jewish prayer is translated…and that their soul has been returned to their body for another day of life…that they haven’t died in the night.

All of these blessings really are times when we “bless” God by saying thank you…thanks for returning my soul to my body and for making sure everything in my body works today. Thanks for making me a woman or a man. Thanks for giving me hands to use in service to God. Thanks for the fruit of the earth. Thanks for bringing me to this season. For or anything you can think of, there is a blessing in Judaism. And the blessing always is offered in the same manner: Blessed are you, God, for whatever it is…We bless God-as if God needs blessings. The blessing provides a way of constantly having an attitude of gratitude, of remembering the source of goodness by offering gratitude…of giving back…of sharing.

We all can take this idea of gratitude farther and offer gratitude to others. We can thank others for what they do for us…and then we can bless them. We all have the ability to bless each other. We can say, “I’m so grateful that you will soon be blessed with a new job, just like the one I know will be coming my way. I can feel it coming to you soon. I can see it!” Or, “I bless you with abundance and prosperity and the fulfillment that comes with a new job that allows you to be of service and use your talents well.”

If you have any doubt about why you should develop an attitude of gratitude, here’s a story to help you understand how the energy of gratitude really works. I love this story, which is based upon a teaching by Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, about how gratitude works. I may have told it before, but it’s worth retelling: There are two farmers who meet on the road and they begin talking. The first one says to the second one, “So, how’s life?” The second one replies, “Not so great. My wife is sick. My crops haven’t been growing so well. My cattle are a bit off their feed and don’t look at fat as usual. In general, things aren’t going so well for me this year. I’d have to say life is pretty bad.”

As it happens, God is eavesdropping on this conversation, and he says to himself (but directed toward the second farmer), “You think things aren’t going well now…You think life is bad now? Just wait. I’ll show you what a bad life really looks like.”

Then the second farmer turns to the first farmer and asks him the same question: “How’s life?” And the first farmer replies, “You know, I can’t complain. My wife is great. My crops look super this year, and my cattle are fat as ever. In general, things are running smoothly and going really well. Life is good.”

God, who is still listening, smiles and says, “You think life is good now, just wait. I’ll show you what a good life really looks like.”

This story speaks directly to the benefits of developing an attitude of gratitude. When we say we are grateful and we see the good in our lives, we open ourselves to receiving more good.
